SDI Disability Benefits Information for California Workers
SDI disability benefits is one type of benefits available to certain California employee who are unable to work for a period of time due to being "disabled".
One of the important things to remember in order to avoid significant fines and penalties is that you cannot collect both unemployment benefits and disability benefits at the same time. This is because to qualify for unemployment benefits, you must certify that you are "available" to work, i.e. you are able to work. On the other hand, to qualify for disability benefits, you have to certify that you are unable to work during the weeks for which you are seeking those benefits. Therefore, it's easy to see why the two application would be incompatible.
You can, however, collect unemployment benefits after you exhaust your disability benefits, assuming that you become available to work at that time and continue to otherwise be qualified.
